A Surprising Discovery in the Cupboard
I was sitting in my room reading a book. Suddenly, it struck me that although today’s math exam had been postponed, it would definitely take place tomorrow. With that thought, I placed my storybook on the table and opened the cupboard to take out my math textbook. Just as I did, my eyes fell on an old muffler tucked away in one of the shelves, and I froze. This was a habit of mine; whenever I saw this muffler, it would startle me, and I would instantly lose myself in deep thought.
An Unexpected Guest
Years ago, I was playing carrom in my room with my friends—Amjad, Majeed, and Javed—when our door suddenly burst open. A middle-aged man stumbled inside. He was about to collapse, but I quickly rushed over and caught him to support his weight. His beard was overgrown, his clothes were torn, filthy, and ragged, and he looked incredibly weak. We all stared in disbelief, wondering what kind of trouble had just landed on our doorstep.
Finally, plucking up some courage, Amjad asked, “Who are you, Baba? Walking into someone’s house like this isn’t right.”
“I haven’t eaten a single morsel of bread since yesterday,” the man rasped. “I was forced to seek shelter here… but I will have my revenge on Jaggu’s child!”
“Who is Jaggu?” I asked, completely bewildered.

Hospitality and Suspense
“Feed me something first, and then I will tell you everything,” he said, collapsing heavily into a chair.
I rushed to the kitchen, frantically rummaging through containers and utensils to find something to offer him. Finally, I managed to put together some biscuits, a plate of meat and potato curry with some flatbread, and a glass of water. Balancing them on a tray, I hurried back to the room, desperately eager to hear his story.
The man took off his wool cap and muffler, settled into the chair, and began devouring the food like a ravenous wolf. Amjad kept snickering at the sight, but I signaled him to be quiet. I pulled up a chair and sat down, while Javed quietly picked up the carrom board and set it in a corner.
Once he finished eating, I took the tray back to the kitchen. Meanwhile, Javed brought over a basin of water, and the man washed his hands, face, and feet thoroughly. After combing his hair, he looked remarkably decent.
As soon as he sat back down, I pleaded, “Baba, please tell us your story now.”
He nodded slowly and began.
Ahmed Khan’s Story: The Crime in the Alley
“My name is Ahmed Khan. My parents perished in the tragic riots of the 1947 Partition. I was only about 25 or 26 years old at the time. Like thousands of others, I migrated to Pakistan. I managed to secure a job, but since I couldn’t find a proper house, I rented a small room in a hotel. Many years passed this way.
One day, I found myself wandering through the old quarters of the city. I was just walking around, looking at the houses—some were deserted and crumbling, while others were bustling with life. I walked deep into the labyrinth of streets until I entered a narrow alley and witnessed two men violently fighting. One was tall, heavily built, and imposing, while the other was thin but fighting back with immense courage.
Suddenly, a knife flashed in the light. In a split second, that blade was buried deep into the thin man’s chest. He let out a blood-curdling scream and collapsed. I rushed forward, but the moment the attacker saw me, he sprinted into the maze of alleys and vanished. However, I had seen his face clearly.
Trapped by Circumstance
“I knelt beside the bleeding man. By then, another passerby, who had heard the screams, rushed into the alley. He asked what happened, and I breathlessly explained the situation. The wounded man, groaning in agonizing pain, gasped out his final words: ‘That… that Jaggu… he ran away…’ and then his head rolled to the side. He was dead.
When I looked up, a crowd had already gathered. Everyone was shouting and throwing accusations. Suddenly, someone pointed at me and yelled, ‘He is the killer! And that other man next to him must be his accomplice!’
‘But… but I didn’t kill him! The real killer ran away!’ I protested in sheer panic. The other bystander was equally terrified.

Within minutes, the police arrived—someone had already called them. Seeing us standing over the corpse, the police questioned the crowd. The mob insisted that the two of us were caught red-handed with the victim. The police grabbed us. We screamed, pleaded, and tried to explain our innocence, but they refused to listen. They handcuffed us, put us in a jeep, and took us to the station. My eyes were wide with shock; I could never have imagined such a nightmare. The other man looked as though he was about to burst into tears.”
“So, what happened next, Baba?” Majeed interrupted, hanging onto every word.
A Desperate Courtroom Strategy
Ahmed Khan sighed and continued:
“They locked us up in a holding cell and left. Sitting in a dark corner, I racked my brain for hours until a desperate plan formed in my mind. I figured that during the trial, if I claimed to be the sole killer, and the stranger—who was completely innocent—also claimed to be the sole killer, we would contradict each other. We would both aggressively try to take the blame. I thought this confusion would prevent the court from handing down a death sentence, and instead of hanging, we might just get an eight to ten-year prison term.
I called the stranger over and told him my plan. He told me his name was Noor Muhammad, and he agreed to the scheme. He, too, had no idea how deeply entrenched we were. Noor Muhammad and I had only gone to save a dying man, and here we were, trapped in a murder charge.
The Trial and the Flawed Verdict
“A few days later, we appeared in court. The prosecutor narrated the event to the judge, pointed at us, and said, ‘Your Honor! These two men were the very first to be spotted next to the deceased. They are the murderers.’
The judge nodded and ordered, ‘Bring forth the witnesses.’
Three men stepped up to testify. I recognized them instantly—they were from the mob that had gathered after the murder. They lied under oath and testified against us. The judge then looked at us and said, ‘If you have anything to say in your defense, speak now.’
I took a deep breath and said, ‘No, Your Honor. I am the real killer. Ahmed Khan is only taking the blame to save my life.’
‘No, sir!’ Noor Muhammad quickly interjected. ‘I am the one who killed him!’
The judge glared at us, silenced us both, and announced, ‘The court is adjourned until the next hearing.’
The hearings dragged on for months. The court simply couldn’t reach a definitive conclusion because we kept repeating the exact same stories. Finally, on the day of the final verdict, the judge warned us, ‘This is your last chance. Think carefully before you speak.’
They took our statements separately one last time, re-examined the witnesses, and then the judge adjourned the session for a brief recess. He and his magistrates retreated into their chambers. Half an hour later, they returned, and the judge delivered the verdict:
‘After hearing the mutual confessions of both the accused and reviewing the eyewitness testimonies, this court concludes that Noor Muhammad and Ahmed Khan were accomplices in this murder. Therefore, the court sentences both convicts to seven years of rigorous imprisonment.’
With a slam of the gavel, the court adjourned. Noor Muhammad and I were sent back to prison. Just yesterday, after seven long years, we were finally released. I don’t know where Noor Muhammad went, but now, I am standing here before you. The fire of revenge is burning furiously in my chest. I will hunt down Jaggu—the monster who destroyed my life and Noor Muhammad’s.”
A Vow of Revenge
“Baba, where will you go now?” I asked softly.
“Son, wherever destiny takes me,” he replied grimly. “I don’t have a home anymore. I never married, and I have no contact with any relatives. But I will destroy that wretched Jaggu. Who knows how many innocent lives he has ruined and gotten away with? I won’t rest until I finish him.”
Ahmed Khan’s eyes were bloodshot, and his face was flushed with pure rage. Slowly, he composed himself, stood up, and said, “Thank you so much, son. May Allah reward you immensely for your kindness.”
He put on his shoes, but just as he was about to step out, he stopped. “Oh, by the way, you boys never told me your names.”
The four of us introduced ourselves. With a nod, he walked out of the room. Javed, Amjad, Majeed, and I followed him outside, watching his weary, heavy steps as he walked away. Once he disappeared into the distance, my friends took their leave as the evening shadows began to stretch across the street.
The Lasting Reminder
When I walked back into the room, my eyes caught Ahmed Khan’s muffler and cap, which had slipped under the chair. I grabbed them and ran outside, searching the streets for a long time. But he was nowhere to be found; he had likely boarded a bus and left.
I kept the muffler and the cap safely in my cupboard. A few days later, my younger brother lost the cap while playing, leaving me with only the muffler.
Now, whenever my eyes fall on that old muffler, I am vividly reminded of Ahmed Khan and his tragic tale. It fills me with a haunting thought: How many more innocent people must be rotting in dark prison cells or swinging from the gallows for crimes they never committed, while the real monsters freely roam our streets?
I still don’t know if Ahmed Khan ever succeeded in getting his revenge, or how terrifying that reckoning must have been. Just the thought of it makes me shudder.
